A box fight is a close-range battle where both players are inside or around small 1x1 boxes. It is fast, tactical and unforgiving: one bad peek and the round is over. Here is how to win more of them.
What is a box fight in Fortnite?
In a box fight, players spawn in or near boxes and fight at close range, usually with shotguns and SMGs. Building is limited to the area around the boxes, so edits, peeks and piece control matter more than tall builds. It is one of the best modes to train for the end of a real game.
Peek with purpose
Use small edits
Do not open a full wall when a half-wall or a window edit gives you the same angle. Smaller edits show less of your body and are easier to reset.
Peek the side your opponent is not watching
If your opponent keeps shooting at one wall, open a different one. Changing angles forces them to react instead of pre-aiming.
Take the pieces around you
Every wall, floor and cone you own is one your opponent cannot use. Before you attack, secure the pieces next to your box. When you move in, take the pieces around their box so they cannot rebuild or escape.
Shotgun timing beats spraying
In close range, one well-timed shotgun shot is worth more than a full SMG spray into a wall. Wait for the edit, wait for the opening, then shoot. Patience wins box fights.
Protect yourself after every action
After every shot or edit, reset or rebuild. A box with an open side is an invitation. Make it a habit: action, then protection.
Do not over-commit
Pushing into an opponent who has full health and full control of their box is risky. Look for a moment when they are low, reloading or mid-edit before you go in.
Drills to get better fast
- Edit courses for 10 minutes every day to make your edits automatic.
- Piece control drills with a friend: one attacks, one defends, then swap.
- Play first-to-5 box fights against players slightly better than you.
- Watch replays of rounds you lost and spot your bad peeks.

FAQ
What weapons are best for box fights?
Shotguns are the main weapon in box fights, with an SMG or assault rifle as a backup for when the opponent is exposed. The exact loadout depends on the map.
Should I build a lot in box fights?
No. Box fights reward smart edits and piece control more than big builds. Build to protect yourself and to take the pieces around your opponent.
